Every project begins with an assessment of the existing floor, its condition, and the homeowner's goals. Recommendations are made after that evaluation—not before it.

Preserve first, sand last
An original floor that has carried a house for a century has a finite number of sandings left in it. HQ starts by asking how little needs to be done, not how much can be billed. Sometimes the answer is a repair and a recoat; sometimes it is a full restoration. Either way the decision is made after looking, not before.

Board condition, one board at a time
HQ evaluates board by board: what is sound, what is cupped, what is split, what is missing, and what has been replaced badly by someone else. Selective repair and careful matching preserve more original material than a wholesale replacement, and original material is the entire reason the floor is worth keeping.

Matching old wood honestly
Species, cut, width, and a century of oxidation all have to be matched when a board must be replaced. HQ will tell you when a match will be close and when it will be visible, before the work starts — an honest warning is worth more than a surprise on the day the furniture comes back.

Finishes chosen for old wood
Historic floors do not always want the hardest finish on the shelf. HQ selects from the Bona waterborne range based on how the house actually lives and how the wood has aged, and samples color on your own sanded floor, in your own light, before anything is committed.
