A staircase that does not match the floor it meets is the first thing a visitor notices. HQ coordinates color and sheen across the transition and evaluates samples on the actual wood. Treads and railings may differ from the adjoining floor in species, age or previous treatment, so an exact match is not assumed.

Stairs take more concentrated traffic than any floor in the home, on a surface that is also a safety consideration. HQ selects a finish system for that reality, from the Bona waterborne range, and discusses sheen with slip in mind rather than only appearance.

Handrails and balusters carry hand oils and years of contact, and they need different preparation than a tread does. HQ addresses them as part of the same project so the staircase reads as one piece of work when it is finished.

What affects hardwood stair refinishing cost?

The number of steps is only the starting point. Landings, exposed tread edges, work around balusters, existing coatings, repairs and the railing components included all change the preparation involved. Ask for a scope that identifies each component. A floor price per square foot does not describe the detailed work on a staircase.

Can my stairs match the hardwood floor beside them?

HQ can coordinate color and sheen, but different wood species, age and existing treatments can produce different results. Samples on the actual wood help you compare the stairs with the adjoining floor. Discuss a close match or an intentional contrast during the assessment rather than assuming the same stain name will look identical on both surfaces.

Can I use the stairs while they are being refinished?

Do not assume the staircase will remain available throughout the work. Sanding and coating affect access, and the selected finish determines when foot traffic can resume. Tell HQ if the stairs are the only route to bedrooms or bathrooms. Agree on the work sequence and access arrangements before scheduling; no alternating-step access is promised.

Does stair refinishing include the handrail, risers and balusters?

Only the components listed in the agreed scope are included. Treads, landings, risers, handrails and balusters may have different materials or coatings and require separate preparation. Share which parts you want refinished and which you want left unchanged. Repairs or replacement work should be identified separately rather than assumed to be part of sanding and finishing.
